Genetically Modified Food, Food Prices, Middle East, and the FED (02/25/11)Don M. Huber, a USDA senior scientist, sent a letter to US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack warning him of a new plant pathogen in Genetically Modified (GM) Soybeans and Corn that may be causing high infertility rates and spontaneous abortions in livestock. The letter went on to suggest that the pathogen could be linked to infectious diseases that drive down crop yields. Despite the warning, Vilsack announced his decision to allow unrestricted commercial planting of GM alfalfa on February 1st.
The Middle East turmoil is directly related to high food prices. Prices are high due to FED policy, tight supplies, and wall street speculation. The U.S. supplies a large percentage of the world's food. If there is now a crisis developing in America's food production as a result of GM products, imagine then the world wide turmoil. |
