Dead Eagles, Dead Salmon (02/25/11)

Up in Canada, America's National Bird, the Bald-Eagle, is starving for food.  It is reported that they are so weak from hunger, that they are literally falling out of the sky and poisoning themselves scavenging for meat in trash dumps.  The culprit behind this is the collapse of spawning Chum Salmon due to overfishing and huge Canadian industrial salmon farms.  The Bald-Eagles are not the only animals in crises.  As early as 2009, Grizzly  Bears have been dying off in huge numbers.  Activists have been demanding action from the Canadian Government for years.

The salmon collapse is not a phenomenon limited to Canada.  The U.S., unlike Canada, has taken action since 2008 including all out bans on fishing in the attempt to correct a collapsing salmon situation off the west coast.  The reasons for the salmon collapse are many: poor ocean quality, poor fresh water quality, access. and overfishing.  The bans on fishing in some places are being lifted but only a limited way.
